SM in the news… more

SM are proud to be featured in the news. The article published on the business pages of the BBC News website highlights the operations involved in running tours for key clients such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga and AC/DC.

Hans Zimmer is one of the world’s most prolific film score composers and record producers. Soundtracks for films including The Lion King, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Gladiator and Inception amongst many others, have led to countless awards including four Grammy awards, an Academy award and multiple Classical Brit awards. Harry Calthorpe (Tour Principal SM UK) is heading up all Operations globally, working with SM offices and it’s excellent partner network.

First move was the UK backline from London to L.A. This included a 140 yr old double bass and Audio rentals (some 6,000kgs). This was sent via airfreight to L.A and delivered to Hans Zimmer’s own “Remote Control productions” in Santa Monica for production rehearsals a week prior to the first tour date. The “Hans Zimmer Revealed” tour kicked off in L.A at the Microsoft Centre with shows in La Vegas and San Francisco in between two Coachella Festival sets. After the second of the two Coachella sets, trucks tipped UK backline & Audio, U.S. backline and TAIT stage set packs straight to SMLAX where the freight was split and shipped out to Auckland, Sydney and the UK as per the plan.

The bulk of the freight (just over 14,000kgs) was shipped from LAX to Auckland for the show at the Spark Arena. After the Auckland show, it was a quick set breakdown and on-site pallet build at the venue to meet the cut off time to get the 14,000kgs of freight on the following days first flight to Sydney.

After shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, the final show was in Perth where the freight would be leaving from to then head back to the EU for the start of “Hans Zimmer Live” in Helsinki in mid-May. The Auckland freight met with part of a TAIT stage set pack we’d already shipped directly to Sydney, so we now had just over 16,000kgs to get to Europe. After much debate and investigation between ourselves, agents and airlines, the best and most secure option was concluded to send the freight into Stockholm for the tour trucks to collect and drive down for the show in Helsinki. Everything again went to plan, although we had a minor issue when part of the freight was off-loaded due to “human remains” being carried as cargo by the airline. This didn’t however result in any delays to the plan as we were covered with our back-up flights to still meet the given deadlines, (SM UK’s contingency planning process).

The tour as of now (17th May) is heading to Stockholm and will be moving across the EU on another 20+ dates including 2 nights at London’s Wembley arena before it finishes up in Milan at the end of June. This is when all freight will then go full circle and be shipped in full (20,000kgs), to the US for the start of the “Hans Zimmer Live” US tour dates kicking off in Dallas and finishing in L.A. Once the tour is finished the freight will be split for the final time where the UK backline & audio will be heading home after nearly 5 months on the road.

Mary Poppins – Dubai more

The multi-national demand for touring Theatre continues to grow. SM UK’s Jackie Jupp has been key in delivering this growth in her role as an industry consultant. The recent tour of Mary Poppins saw 18 x 40ft Ocean containers loaded in Zurich, CH to then be driven to Rotterdam, NL where they set sail to Dubai for load in at the Opera House. The recently opened venue forms part of the UAE’s contemporary cultural footprint. Jackie, along with Theatre Operations Lead Tom Golubovic, co-ordinated all freight operations for the event which also included the Air-freight of 4 aircraft pallets of vendor equipment from the UK.

Welsh National Opera more

Jackie Jupp from the Theatre consultancy team at SM UK recently delivered the Welsh National Opera to Dubai. Performances of La Boheme and Madame Butterfly took place at the Dubai Opera. In all, over 11,000kgs of equipment were flown utilising 2 x 20ft aircraft pallets and 7 x lower deck (3m) pallets. SM UK’s Martin Corr and Marek Nakonowski were dispatched to oversee the build of the UK gear at point of export and subsequent return. Images of the breakdown of the air-pallets upon return are shown on the banner of this website.

Camel Heritage Festival 2017 more

SM UK were honoured to assist in the delivery of the Camel Heritage Festival in Rimah, Saudi Arabia. Working with multiple vendors for the event, SM UK’s Callum Knight project planned and implemented the delivery of key, varied commodities. This included amongst many others, Video screens, Temporary structures and Furniture from all over Europe. A unique piece of equipment included a wind tunnel dispatched from Latvia (see image of truck). In total, 109 trucks were loaded of which 98 were 40ft trailers, all originating in Dubai.

112 Tonnes of equipment was sent by Air freight to Saudi Arabia from Europe.

For a project of this size, Callum teamed up with SM UK’s Marek Nakonowski who delivered all operations on-site in Rimah. This included the complex Customs procedures to maintain the multiple scheduled deliveries.

Kasabian Rigs more

UK rock band (and long standing clients), Kasabian are ready to resume full services. Released in May ’17 and in support of the band’s new album “For Crying Out Loud”, the band recently performed in Australia at the Sydney Opera House.

Utilising their “B” rig, SM UK’s Andy Lovell went to work organising the freight itinerary for the band’s Production Manager.

The “A” rig was held in the UK awaiting the start of the UK tour in April, ’17. The band will commence a full festival season this summer with SM UK proud to be on board.

Steve Hackett more

GCF more

Late '16 and the image shows the first day of work to build the stage for the Global Citizen Festival taking place at the MMRDA grounds in Mumbai. The Festivals first appearance in India saw artists such as Demi Lovato, The Vamps, Jay Z and Coldplay perform. In return for tickets, fans provided "actions" assisting others. Over 2,000,000 actions were raised in the build up to the event. SM UK's John Corr was on-site with StageCo delivering the show

At time of writing, the European leg of Beyoncé's Formation has just finished.
Many months of planning by Justin Carbone (SM US V.P.) were activated to ensure the complete show was flown from the US to the UK after the first run of North American dates.

Some 7 x 747 cargo aircraft were used to transport both the Production and Steel, (staging); 5 departed from Newburgh Airport, NY (images) loaded with Production and 2 loaded with the Steel, departing from New York's JFK airport. The Production alone totalled 180 aircraft (PMC), ULD positions. SM UK's, Martin and John Corr oversaw the operation in the UK at Prestwick and Doncaster Sheffield airports.

Post European dates, all of the equipment was sent back to the US via Ocean freight with the above and Justin Carbone on site to once again implement the meticulous plans.

Sound Moves UK are proudly supporting this kick-starter campaign.

SM @ 20 more

The SM Music Touring team are currently "mid-season"! Please open the attached link for a brief overview of select client operations and team focus in our 20th Anniversary year.

RIO 2016 more

After the highly successful London 2012, Sound Moves UK are once again proud to be dispatching freight and people (!) to the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Working in a supporting function to our partners in the US, an SM UK crew are to project manage the safe and timed delivery of equipment for over 500 athletes.

Whether the show you're watching has a performance by children's TV artists or a rock band who have been ageing nicely for decades, the one common denominator is that merchandise will be available for sale at all venues and shows.

Early summer and SM UK's facility is dispatching freight to locations all over Europe as stand-alone tours and the festival season get into full swing. One particular example highlighted in the image below is from the current Bruce Springsteen European tour. A full merchandise crew came to SM UK to organise the "pull" of a full truck's worth of swag. This delivered a true, "warehouse on wheels".

When the show must go on in a particularly tight timeframe then sometimes only aircraft charter can make it happen. SM oversee the operation of all sizes and types to global destinations when show dates dictate.

SM UK Director Andy Lovell recently planned and executed the delivery of band gear for long-standing client, Eros Ramazzotti. Flown between Baku, Azerbaijan and Tel Aviv, Israel the equipment was loaded on to an Antonov AN-12 aircraft by SM UK's Callum Knight. Post show at the Baku Crystal Hall, Callum handled the loading of the aircraft with the fully briefed on the ground teams and boarded the aircraft for the flight to Tel Aviv, (insert landing image not normally allowed on passenger flights). 8,474kgs of gear collected and delivered to each show.

Some 15 years since their inception, Florida rockers SHINEDOWN have been touring the globe for many years.

With European tour dates booked in support of their late '15 album release "Threat To Survival", the Production team instructed Sound Moves Newark to provide the comprehensive freight plan for the European dates. Justin Carbone (US VP) went to work on delivering and implementing all pre-agreed schedules.

Ocean freighted from the US to UK, Paul Jones (GM Ops SM UK) imported 18,000lbs of equipment and loaded the equipment onto tour trucks. Post European dates, the equipment was loaded into sea containers at the Manchester MEN Arena and sent back to the US. Sound Moves are proud to once again support SHINEDOWN

Early 2016 has seen a sombre start to the year and witnessed the passing of some key, loved and respected musicians, (many times repeated superlatives not required).

Sound Moves provided logistics to David Bowie's longest (and last), World Tour: The 112 show "A Reality Tour" (ART). ART commenced in Copenhagen, Denmark in October 2003 and finished some 9 months later in Germany. John Corr (SM UK) was present on many sectors of ART in his capacity as Tour Principal. He recalls riding in a New Jersey cab to a show with a group of dedicated fans one of whom was wearing a pink bunny suit. "Whilst I didn't get to see as many shows as them all of the five I saw were memorable. I was looking forward to catching a few more in Europe when the heart scare bought the tour to an early end, so once in a while I enjoy watching the tour DVD.

It is also the only time a Production Manager has asked me to copy the artist on an e-mail to explain the need to compromise on his vision for the show and accept that for economic reasons, a scaled back version was needed in some Asian cities". The tour visited Asia, the Bahamas, the US (twice), and Australia and New Zealand; the first time Bowie had toured there for 17 years. Image is of John's pass from the tour, (we treasure these instant memory triggers but some more than others in this instance).

Purity Ring - Another Eternity.png

Canadian electronic music duo Purity Ring are building momentum. At time of writing, the group are playing multiple festival dates in the southern hemisphere. Demand for their music will see their show appearances grow and grow over the coming months on the back of their album release "Another Eternity". SM UK's Tom Golubovic is working alongside his client who is now the Production Manager for the group.

This week (week comm: 25th), the delivery of equipment to the Singapore Laneway Festival is scheduled as well as moves to New Zealand and Australia before the return to the US.

HERE'S TO THE NEXT…………. more

In 1996, three logistics experts in three locations came together to start Sound Moves. Duane Wood, Martin Corr and Wayde Daniel were based in Los Angeles, London and New York respectively.

The chosen regional headquarters reflected the key locations for the music industry. In the same year that saw the DVD being launched in Japan, Sound Moves was offering a new freight solution. Fast forward to present day and the company has grown at a considered pace. This includes many additions to key personnel, new offices and a truly global client proposition.

Our market share in the music touring sectors has been enhanced and we now offer the same products and ethos to multiple divisions of the creative industries including Theatre, Sports, Creative agencies and Corporate live event. We'd like to say thanks to all of our friends over the last 20 years. Here's to the next…………..

The latest edition of US publication Mobile Production magazine features an in-depth interview with SM President, Duane Wood. The topic? THE ROLLING STONES, (long-standing clients)

SM UK were recently engaged by a key supplier to the Abu Dhabi National Day celebrations. Although events are held in early December, all air freight sectors of the bespoke live event activation equipment must be made on time for the load-in, set-up, rehearsal and show. The sphere and rigging equipment for the event were tailored to provide a unique experience. The SM UK team headed up by Simon Jackson oversaw the smooth and on-time performance for the client from and to the UK.

At time of writing (late November), the SM global team are delivering a key element to any show………………..the lights. This time, it's for Taylor Swift's latest World Tour. Our client (VER – Video Equipment Rentals), required us to plan and deliver over 60 tons of equipment by ocean. 6 x 40ft containers were loaded and exported from London and 1 x 40ft container was loaded from Los Angeles. Project lead Callum Knight handled all moves to final destination, the ANZ Stadium in Sydney, Australia. Post last show in Melbourne, the equipment will increase and be loaded into 5 containers to Los Angeles and 6 containers to London as other lighting rigs from other tours are to be shipped.

Whist the Rugby World Cup didn't exactly yield the results the host nation had hoped for, SM UK were proud to be involved in Operations behind the scenes. One key creative design agency involved in implementing a hosting product for the Tournament tasked SM Ops Lead Callum Knight with ensuring the safe and timely delivery of bespoke furniture and fittings. These were to be utilised for corporate hospitality purposes. Callum started his meticulous planning  in April 2014, some 17 months before the referees whistle blew to commence the start of the first game. Multiple truck sectors were required to deliver the goods from the many venues across the UK. 43 x 45ft hard side trailers were rolling from the start of the Tournament and they didn't stop until the final load out at Twickenham @ 0700hrs on the Sunday after the final between Australia and New Zealand. A typical example of the SM service from BID, PLAN to OPERATE (1 individual across ALL).

    COMING SOON more

This advert was recently seen in the key trade press. There is a LOT more to come as you hear from us via social media, the trade press, website and eagerly anticipated live events. 2016 is a big year for us so stay tuned for further updates!

Sound Moves UK trades under BIFA (British International Freight Association), regulations and we utilise its advice and services in its role as an independent industry body for logistics providers. Although this is to remain and we have operated this way for many years, we have recently amended our account application forms. Should you require a copy of these and/or the abridged BIFA terms, then please email:

It's not always the o2 Arena, Madison Square Garden, rehearsal facility or secret show in a small venue. Sometimes we receive requests from clients asking for equipment to be sent to far flung global destinations. Paul Jones (PJ) from the UK team was asked earlier this year to dispatch multiple shipments to some of the most remote locations on the planet.

One example was sending the Scottish band Glasvegas to a remote village in Ecuador's jungle. A TV show was being filmed for the UK series, "Singing In The Rainforest". The series sees artists leave their creature comforts behind to embrace life with remote tribes. There is one common denominator between both parties: Music.

PJ organised all logistics for the bands backline weighing some 1,000kgs. This included the export from the UK, the complicated Customs procedures in Quito, the on-forwarding via road to the Ecuadorian jungle and then the final sector via small boat on the Amazon river to the location of the village, (see image). PJ has also worked with the same production company on other moves for the same series. These included sending the Happy Mondays to Panama and Charlie Simpson (ex-Busted, Fightstar) to Namibia, each one with its own unique challenges. The show airs in the UK on 12/10/15 (WATCH TV).

UK trio CHVRCHES are busy touring the world. The synth-pop band are currently in the US playing multiple dates following the late September release of their second album, "Every Open Eye". SM UK's Dave Gleave is heading up the tour with operations handled by Darren Cox.

The tour includes newly built stage set and backline weighing over 2,000kgs. Part of the teams role was to co-ordinate equipment listings with all vendors for the global carnets prior to the first air-freight move to the US.

Future moves include shows in Canada, the return to the UK for a comprehensive tour and multiple Australasian festival dates in the new year.

UK producer, DJ and songwriter Hudson Mohawke is in demand. In the next 5 weeks (at writing), the latest schedule takes the show all over the US before European dates and then back to the US!

Earlier international moves this year included a performance at the Fuji Rocks festival in Japan.

Darren Cox from the SM UK team works with the Tour Manager throughout all moves of the drum and electronic equipment.

The images shows stacks of ULD's (unit Load devices) at SM UK's facility 10 minutes from Heathrow Airport. Each "pallet" can carry up to 4,500kgs of cargo.

The global SM team utilises these so we can safely build, net and strap the backline and production equipment before tendering the goods to an Airline. At arrival airport, we also collect them "intact" before being broken down and then delivered to the final destination.

This is to reduce handling as we micro-manage all sectors of our precious cargo. August bank holiday (UK) has just passed and this traditionally marks the slowing down of the European festival season.

The high volumes are in part to artist's own tours and Festival slots such as the Reading and Leeds festivals (UK) with acts such as deadmau5 headlining Sunday nights NME stage. 21 tonnes of equipment imported into the UK using ULD's for that show alone.

SM UK went to work this week on another chartered aircraft sector. Paul Jones (General Manager, Operations) operated all freight requirements including the loading and unloading of the aircraft and all trucks.

The show prior to the air sector was in Bratislava, Slovakia with the next show in St. Malo, France at La Route Du Rock Festival. The "combi" aircraft was an ATR-42 300 which saw Paul, the crew and band fly as the only method available to ensure the show.

The original festival line-up included Bjork who had cancelled all touring duties. The Slovakian show was confirmed by Foals well in advance of the call up for the festival as Bjork's replacement.

After a very tense final against Kuehne and Nagel, Sound Moves wins 2 - 0 on penalties to add our name to the Air France 6 a-side Cup for a second time.

Once again the hero of the hour was new boy Louis Martin with 2 fantastic penalty saves to help bring the trophy back 'home' to Ashford.

Thanks to all the teams and match officials taking part and a special thanks to Air France Cargo for the refreshments and a great day in the sunshine!

    – Due to maintenance, local road closures are scheduled for this week. Commencing 29th June and due to last until the 4th July, full night closures are in place between 2000hrs and 0500hrs. Established routes via Ashford Road (B377) are subject to diversions for all vehicles. Please note, if you require our services during the above hours please use the A308 and drive on to School Road, Ashford.

The free to air festival is co-organised by the station and the local county council and enjoys extensive national radio and TV coverage. Held this year in Norwich, SM clients performing at the event include The Vaccines, Catfish and the Bottlemen, 5 Seconds of Summer, Years and Years and James Bay.

Multiple air and road imports of band equipment and merchandise are planned and implemented by the SM UK operations team.

    JAMES BAY more

Singer songwriter James Bay is making a large impact the world over with his album "Chaos and the Calm." SM UK is proud to be providing freight logistics to the Production Team for the James Bay Tour.

Harry Calthorpe (Tour Principal SM UK) writes: "We will be collecting the freight in Bristol on the final night of a sold-out UK tour. Cargo will then be exported from Heathrow to Montreal for delivery to the Virgin Mobile Corona Theatre for the 1st of 13 shows in the US and Canada. SM will cross-load in New Jersey to facilitate delivery into Manhattan, avoiding potential bus and trailer restrictions.

The freight is returning to the UK after the final tour date at the KROQ Weenie Roast Y Fiesta, flying LAX -LHR. Once returned, the goods will be trucked to Earlham Park Norwich for BBC Radio1's Big Weekend."

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF – more

NEW STARTER Louis Martin (Serge) joined the SM UK Operations team in early April '15. With a smile on his face, Louis assisted clients with two urgent hand-carry consignments. The first was documentation that had to be taken to Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist Gus G in Thessaloniki, Greece. Before he'd had time to put his bag down, Louis was off again, this time to Bahrain. Urgent lighting parts needed to be taken to Lewis Hamilton's race team for the Friday practice at the Grand Prix circuit.

Both consignments were delivered on time and as per schedule. Hand carry is part of the SM UK service provided as needed to ensure that the show takes place, even when an item can't travel with the rest of the shipment. Throughout his unintentional initiation ceremony, Louis continued to smile.

The Music Touring team welcomed Harry Calthorpe into its ranks in 2014. Safely extracted from a career that involved wearing a tie, Harry's remit is to roll up his sleeves (showing off the artwork) and get stuck into London's music venues.

Within twelve months, Harry is already making a name for himself, working with clients such as Nothing More, The Gaslight Anthem, James Bay, Phantogram, Milky Chance, Ministry and Borns to name a few.

Expect to see the smiling face on the left (the one that isn't Noel Fielding) at a show near you.

    YEARS & YEARS more

Sound Moves loves working with new artists. Years & Years is one such up-and-coming artist. SM UK's Callum Knight is working with the Tour and Production Manager on European moves as the trio's touring schedule grows.

AC/DC – ROCK OR BUST more

Sound Moves US are proud to once again be appointed as official freight company for AC/DC’s latest World Tour.

Following on the mammoth Black Ice Tour (2008 - 2010), the Rock or Bust tour is scheduled to play arenas and stadiums in Europe, the States and Canada in 2015. The Sound Moves team, headed by President Duane Wood (US) and SM UK MD Martin Corr, is already months into the planning of all freight sectors.

Latest shipping includes air-freight and sea-freight of back-line and vendor business. At the time of writing 21 x 40ft containers and 28 x aircraft pallet positions are departing post rehearsals in LA.

Sound Moves UK continues to diversify its product base and emphasise its focus on the global sports markets. One on-going project is the inaugural European Games to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan this summer. The event will feature 20 sports represented by 6,000 athletes from 50 European national Olympic committees in June.

The SM team commenced planning for this project in July 2014. SM UK are currently operating multiple trucks loaded in the UK as well as expediting urgent air-freight consignments from the UK and Western Europe. USHER more

Global star USHER is back on tour with Sound Moves. A long standing client of SM US Vice President Justin Carbone, Usher kicked off the European leg of his #URXTOUR. Since late 2014, Paul Jones, SM UK Operations, has been at work setting up an appropriate site large enough for the cross-load of all the tour’s production equipment.

In January the team unloaded 15 x 40ft sea containers onto awaiting tour trucks. Not captured on the images below was the -10 degree wind chill on the day! Rain or shine (or freezing wind), all was delivered as per the schedule set during the planning phase.

Happy New Year to you all from the team at SM UK. 2015 is shaping up to be a busy one with multiple clients of all types and sizes already hitting the road (and air and ocean). Stay up to date with our latest news here and via our social media pages on Facebook and Twitter (@soundmovesuk)

Lady Gaga’s latest European Tour has come to a close. Appearing all over the world with logistics provided by Sound Moves UK, the ArtRave Tour has spanned multiple continents playing to Arenas and Stadiums. In November ’14 the tour equipment returned back to the USA.

Headed by Andy Lovell and assisted by Paul Jones, the Sound Moves team co-ordinated, operated and delivered 32,000 kg from Heathrow to Las Vegas via Los Angeles by air freight as well as eighteen 40ft containers from the UK to New York by ocean freight.

Sound Moves UK (SM UK), are proud to have been announced as a finalist in the 2014 BIFA Awards.
BIFA (British International Freight Association) is recognised as a leading UK authority in logistics, providing representation, information and guidance, training and development for transportation companies.

The awards, to be held in mid-January 2015, recognise leading companies and specialists in their fields. Sound Moves UK has been nominated in the Project Forwarding category for services provided to The Rolling Stones in 2014.

Seminal UK studio Sphere Studios has moved! During its tenure in South London, artists such as Duran Duran, The Script, Will.I.Am, Queen and a veritable who’s who in the creative industries have called it their recording or writing home.

Adele also chose the facility for recording her ground breaking album, “21”. Early in 2014, Sphere Studios owner Francesco Cameli requested Sound Moves UK’s services for the relocation of high-value, rare recording equipment and musical instruments as part of the comprehensive re-homing of the UK studio.

Great proponents of the analogue recording method, the studios required a “cotton-wool” approach to the load-out and specialist packing of all equipment prior to its departure via sea freight.

SM UK’s Martin Corr and Duncan Peek designed a solution that met these requirements and best suited Cameli’s relocation schedule (both studio and personal).  As of October 2014, Sphere Studios LA is operational and welcoming artists from the vibrant LA session music scene across all genres.

Francesco stated: “Moving an entire studio to the other side of the world can be a daunting task. Sound Moves were able to remove all the stress and make sure everything got there safely. Not only did 100% of my gear get there in perfect working order, but the strangest thing happened. When we un-crated the Steinway and set it up for the first session, we all fell off our chairs when the piano tuner announced that the piano was still perfectly in tune! Thank you Sound Moves for taking such good care of all my gear”

    FINK more

UK singer/songwriter FINK has been touring Europe and beyond for many years. 2014 saw the release of his album “Hard Believer” which entered charts the world over.

SM UK’s Simon Jackson has co-ordinated all freight moves for the September US and Canada tour and at time of writing is arranging Customs documentation for the European shows which will run until late November.

No matter the size, shape or type of event, Sound Moves UK loves a challenge. A moving stage made of ice and positioned in the Greenland Sea sounds like something out of a dream sequence but in late September 2014, it became a reality. British metal band The Defiled performed on top of an iceberg as part of the Jagermeister Ice Cold Gig Series.

SM UK’s Dave Gleave worked closely with the production team to pull off this logistically challenging performance:  “The job ran smoothly actually considering everyone involved was new to airfreight procedures. I was dealing with Tom from the production company involved who had meticulously outlined all the show plans.

They gave me the delivery date at Kulusuk airport and I worked back from that, establishing a schedule and making sure everyone was aware that we needed to keep to that schedule in order to guarantee the success of the mission. Tom and myself arranged for the suppliers to deliver to Sound Moves’ Heathrow warehouse. This included the Defiled’s backline and instruments, plus the lighting and camera gear. The only issue came when we were informed quite late on that lithium batteries that were needed to power the Drones that would be used for the aerial shots (see images).

These batteries were classed as hazardous but we immediately arranged for specialist packing and shipping, allowing them to fly. The equipment was packed onto 5 wooden pallets, (there were size restrictions on the flight) and flown to Reykjavik. For the final leg of the journey (Reykjavik to Kulusuk), we changed the build of the equipment to fit the contours of the small aircraft. After the highly successful shoot, Tom returned the gear to Kulusuk on the agreed date. Everything was returned to Heathrow on schedule.”

The shows’ unique setting made global news:

Sound Moves UK recently worked with Rick Wakeman on his exclusive performance at the 2014 Starmus Festival. Based in Tenerife, the Festival is renowned as one of the worlds’ leading Astronomical events – attendees and speakers include astronauts, cosmonauts and theoretical physicists. The week-long event blends science, culture and the arts and the evening entertainment included Wakeman’s unique concert.

SM UK’s Simon Jackson began liaising with Ricks’ crew months in advance on all matters relating to the safe and timely delivery of the band equipment.

One hurdle was the lack of appropriate aircraft flying to the island as it is served primarily by narrow bodied craft, meaning there was not sufficient capacity to carry over 2,000kgs of band gear. Tenerife operates outside of EU regulations on temporary importation of goods, which also made the customs documentation process more complicated.

An air-freight solution was found for a direct flight departing from a UK regional airport with excellent support from the local handling agent. The equipment was delivered on time for rehearsals and collected post-show as per the schedule designed by Rick Wakeman’s crew.

Paul Weller’s latest US and Canadian tour has just concluded, with Sound Moves UK on hand throughout the tour. Working with Paul Weller’s Tour Manager Kenny Wheeler, SM UK’s Simon Jackson co-ordinated domestic road sectors, security screening, air-freight and customs documentation for the tour’s exportation to the USA.

The SM Newark team imported the UK fly-pack, prior to the collection of all the US rental equipment. The essential border crossings in and out of Canada were planned well in advance in order to meet the time-critical tour bus schedule. SM UK are proud long term freight providers to the Weller team.

Table Football – no spinning chaps! more

SM UK are proud and active members of the Hounslow Chamber of Commerce. The team recently sponsored an event for local business people at Londons’ iBurbia studios. The activity for the night was table football with multiple teams going head to head, (almost literally), trying to lift the coveted 1st prize (think alcohol filled trophy).

Sadly, the SM UK team lost most of their games with excuses ranging from “team orders”  and the restriction on spinning the players! Most importantly, a  great time was had by all with some great introductions being made throughout the evening. The local media coverage is attached below: -

    LORDE – Pure Heroine more

Artist Lorde burst on to the scene in 2013 with her single release “Royals”. This was followed shortly by the release of the album, “Pure Heroine”. SM UK are proud freight partners to her world tour.

Attached pictures show part of the stage set prior to being security screened, built on to aircraft units and then flown from London Heathrow to Newark, New York. Production manager for the tour Richard Young is a long standing client of SM UK Director Andy Lovell, having worked with him on multiple tours for artists including P!NK and Radiohead.

    SM in Pole Position more

Sound Moves UK loves to demonstrate its services to new clients thus enabling the show whatever the genre or commodity moved. Late May and the team flew 2 formula one cars to Canada for a support race to the Canadian Grand Prix. Both cars came with a strong race pedigree.

A 1982 McLaren MP4 as raced by John Watson and a 1980 Ferrari 312T5 driven by Canadian legend Gilles Villeneuve were flown to Montreal to be raced in the Masters Historic Grand Prix. Well in advance of the move, full SM UK consultation provided total planning and liaison with all parties supporting the move. During implementation, the team provided “kid gloves” care overseeing all sectors prior to the air-freight sector, (LHR – YUL).

The importance of the move has even been highlighted in the Air Canada staff magazine, circulated the world-over

    2014 Charters more

Client tour itineraries can specify tight deadlines between shows, especially during the busy summer months. Our clients continue to rely on Sound Moves UK to ensure the show always goes on. Often chartered aircraft sectors are the only method of transportation available, as transportation by road simply isn’t fast enough.

A charter flight is always attended by a Sound Moves tour principal so the team has been busy this summer travelling all over Europe. A typical sector includes flying to the city in which the latest show is finishing, visiting the venue and supervising and assisting the crew as they load trucks bound for the airport of departure. Once the trucks arrive, the SM UK operator has to load the aircraft, ensuring individual cases are handled correctly, finalise customs paperwork, and then board the cargo aircraft bound for the closest airport to the artist’s next performance.

Upon landing, the whole process is repeated in reverse. Once a careful unload of the aircraft has taken place, waiting trucks collect the goods and the SM UK operator oversees delivery to the venue. Throughout the process, the operator maintains constant communication with the artist’s production manager and with the Sound Moves project manager responsible for the overall logistics for the tour. Each charter sector is different and presents its own challenges and nuances. Forward planning is key to cover all eventualities.

The SM UK team also provides freight attendance for Asian and South American tour sectors, which we implement during any season and within any timeframe.

Sound Moves has recently completed European charter sectors for the following clients: FOALS, PLACEBO, ARCTIC MONKEYS, THE ROLLING STONES, PORTISHEAD, METRONOMY and MASSIVE ATTACK. Visit the Sound Moves UK Facebook page to see pictures and stories from individual sectors.

Snapshot of a SM weekend! more

Summer is here and the work-load is increasing (we secretly love it, but don’t tell the boss!) During a typical Sound Moves UK weekend the team will send multiple chartered aircraft flights throughout Europe with SM crew on board, manage several road sectors in all types of vehicles and process warehouse import and export of tour related equipment.

During peak periods, our office Abbeygate House near London Heathrow has crew on hand 24 hours a day to ensure that all freight is handled and screened correctly and on-schedule. 2 weekends ago the team handled cargo for the likes of Black Sabbath, Billy Idol, Pat Metheny, Arcade Fire, Soundgarden and The Rolling Stones, including dispatching 14 tonnes to New York, 14 tonnes to LA as well as shipments to Seattle, and across Europe and Asia.

    GLASTONBURY 2014 more

The Sound Moves network is proud to have multiple clients perform at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. The prestigious UK festival is held in late June every year and is critically acclaimed for the high quality of performers and wide range of musical genres represented. Many of the artists play Glastonbury as part of a larger European Festival circuit. The UK team completed multiple deliveries of equipment to Sound Moves clients, including two of the headline acts:

ARCADE FIRE – Friday night headline
    KASABIAN – Sunday night headline

refurbished logistics facility in Ashford more

Sound Moves UK recently unveiled its refurbished logistics facility in Ashford near London’s Heathrow airport. Specialists in providing bespoke logistics to the creative industries for nearly 20 years, Sound Moves recently acquired its long-term home, Abbeygate House, marking an important step in the company’s continuing development.

During the official launch event special guests were invited to tour the refurbished building including the crew break room, the state-of-the-art boardroom with video-training facilities and the 1950’s theatre themed reception area. The artwork for the reception area was completed by artist Jonathan Minshull and was specially commissioned by Sound Moves.

Abbeygate House also features an 18,000 square foot warehouse for transit cargo and long-term storage, two cargo docks capable of handling hi-cube trailers, overnight parking for trucks and tour buses and an X-ray with dual view screening for cargo departing via air-freight.

Managing Director Martin Corr said “Since our founding in 1995, we have grown significantly as a company both in terms of our client base and our team of operations specialists. The new facilities will allow that development to continue. Not only does the office have more square footage, the space has also been rebranded and refurbished to our specifications. This will allow us to bring the organisation to the next level of high-touch customer service.”

Sound Moves provides freight forwarding and logistics services to a wide variety of touring clients including The Rolling Stones, Arcade Fire, Katy Perry, Beyoncé, P!nk, Kasabian and Sadlers Wells Theatre; as well as to providers to the creative industries such as VER and XL Video.

Simon Jackson, Business Development Manager, states “Sound Moves is well-known and highly respected in the Music Touring sector both in the UK and worldwide. For example our London team has won TPi Favourite Freight Forwarding Company five times. As a business we are often thought of as the ‘last minute life-savers’ with an operational team who will do everything possible to ensure the show goes on as planned. Because of this we have clients who work with us year after year, trusting us with their most important and toughest freight moves.”

The investment in Abbeygate House is part of a larger development plan for Sound Moves. According to Jackson, “Along with the facility we have also invested in the commercial side of the business with new members joining the sales team to specialise in additional creative industry sectors including Sporting Events and Corporate Live Events. The focus is to continue to grow market share in these areas utilising the same operational excellence that Sound Moves is known for. Our wholly owned facility is a statement of intent at its foundations.”

US pop artist Katy Perry is currently on tour, selling out arenas all over Europe. Sound Moves US and UK are proud freight partners to her Prismatic world tour. The SM network team is headed up by Justin Carbone (VP US) and supported by Martin Corr (MD UK). At the time of writing, the tour was nearing its close at London’s O2 Arena where a full load-out of all equipment will commence. Multiple 25 x 40ft containers with a total weight in excess of 270 tonnes are to be loaded prior to the sea-freight return. The SM team will continue their logistics support for the upcoming US arena tour dates.

Katy Perry's Production Manager Jay Schmit thanked Sound Moves in a recent interview with TPi Magazine (Total Production International Magazine), stressing the important role the freight partner plays for the tour:
“Martin Corr is my guy in the UK and Justin Carbone in the US; as a production manager, those guys are like my two best friends because a production manager has to put trust and faith in freight, if freight doesn’t make it or if freight isn’t safe, there are very real consequences. I trust their decision making. The added value is that they are very competitive price wise, and the value in their services and the abilities they offer, is to me personally - bar none - the best. I can’t really live up to my potential without them.”

At the time of writing, rehearsals of the epic show Walking With Dinosaurs are imminent. Custom-built dollies were required to support the show’s cast members including the T-Rex and smaller dinosaur co-stars during their travel to the rehearsal facilities. Given the size of each dolly, specialist handling and transportation were essential at all stages of the process, from load out of long-term storage to unloading prior to delivery to Ohio.

A specialist trailer and straps were used to secure the load prior to sea-freight from UK to Chicago. The dino cargo weighed under 10 tonnes, but the straps are able to handle up to 100 tonnes of load. A team of out-of-gauge cargo specialists were drafted to position both straps and ensure safe weight distribution (see pictures). As with the previous Walking With Dinosaurs world tour, the Sound Moves UK team led by Tour Principal John Corr was on hand to ensure proper handling throughout.

    TOTAL WEIGHT – 174,008kgs

THE BLACK KEYS Turn Blue more

Sound Moves US are proud to once again be freight partners to The Black Keys. With the May release of their new album “Turn Blue,” the band’s emphasis has been on promotion. With multiple TV appearances and album showcase gigs occurring within a short timeframe, the equipment has to keep up with the band’s hectic schedule.

The Black Keys had a late night TV appearance in Milan on Sunday followed by an appearance on a London TV show on Tuesday – a tight deadline that required the use of a Chartered Aircraft to ensure the gear arrived on time. Thomas Duffy (SM US) with Darren Cox (SM UK) organized the aircraft sector, planning weeks in advance. The 4,000kgs of equipment were loaded out of the studio late Sunday night and delivered to Brescia airport for a flight to London’s Southend Airport. SM UK staff were on board to oversee operations. Tuesday night the Black Keys performed on the live BBC TV show “Later… with Jools Holland,” with the next deadline only 24 hours later for TV show rehearsals in a multiple artist format.

Sound Moves Featured in New Heathrow more

Sound Moves UK and Managing Director Martin Corr were recently featured in a new brochure titled, “Heathrow: A national asset”. The brochure was produced by Heathrow Airport to highlight the important role that a hub airport plays in the national economy. It focused on twelve successful business around the UK, showing how their operations rely on the services Heathrow provides, and how these businesses in turn help create jobs, foster trade and support the British economy.

Sound Moves is proud to have been highlighted as one of these SME businesses and to support the development of LHR. Martin Corr says, “As the BRIC markets continue to grow, our business will become increasingly reliant on the destinations that a hub airport supports.”

After the release of the publication, Martin Corr met with Heathrow Chief Executive Colin Matthews and the leaders of the other featured businesses (pictured).

    THE more

Long-standing clients of Sound Moves New York, The Killers returned to European soil in late 2013. The band was supporting the release of their Greatest Hits album, ‘Direct Hits’, as well as celebrating the 10th anniversary of their first show in London’s Camden Town. Their live performances in the UK included a one-off show at London’s Hammersmith Apollo, the MTV European Music Awards and the UK X-Factor. SM UK were on-hand throughout all sectors – handling the importation of 20-tonnes of equipment, the scheduling of tour truck loadings and maintaining full 24 hour liaison with the production team and crew.

Sound Moves UK demonstrated its diverse products and services to Ellipsis, a leading design agency based in the UK. The task? To provide logistics services to a market-leading corporate client for their Global Senior Management Convention held in Istanbul, Turkey. Appointed by Ellipsis Managing Director Chris Hoskins, SM UK assisted during the consultancy, storage and planning stages eight months prior to the event, including undertaking a full draft set build in our warehousing facility.  The team handled complex customs regulations, flew the equipment to Istanbul as per schedule with full SM UK attendance (see pictures) and after the convention returned all the equipment to the vendors.

Chris Hoskins wrote:  “I would like to thank both Sound Moves, and Simon Jackson specifically, for the first class service they provided in transporting our equipment to an important conference event in Istanbul. I was initially a little worried that not being a successful music artist would mean this might not be the right company for us but I couldn't have been more wrong. The initial preparation work was detailed and easy, the carnet preparation was simple, everything delivered on budget even with last minute changes and the door-to-door service was flawless. But it was also the extra detail which really made a difference, a cheerful attitude, attention to detail, nothing was too much trouble and Simon even emailed us photos of our equipment loading on the aircraft at 3am!”

This past month, Sound Moves had the pleasure of organising the worldwide shipping for the NBA Global Games 2013. Justin Carbone, Sound Moves VP USA, was in charge of the transportation of a wide variety of equipment for the Games. All the gear originated from NBA headquarters in Secaucus, NJ and was successfully shipped overseas to nine major cities in the UK, Spain, Turkey, Philippines, Brazil, China, Taiwan, and Mexico.

    WHITE LIES TO more

It’s mid-October and Sound Moves have had another tight deadline to ensure the show goes ahead. On this occasion, SM UK were privileged to work with London-based band White Lies who are busy promoting their new album, “Big TV”.

One of the recent shows included a performance hosted by Burberry in Singapore. The deadline was tight given the +8 hour time difference between London and Singapore and the 11-hour flying time. Working through the night to make the show, SM UK collected the equipment at 0030hrs from the band’s rehearsal facility in East London.

The cargo was brought to Heathrow for screening, documentation and Carnet clearance procedures before being delivered to the airline’s cargo warehouse to meet the flight close-out. The consignment was operated by Darren Cox (Operations Lead SM UK) working in conjunction with Dave Gleave (Tour Principal SM UK).

Load out venue, London – 0030hrs BST Thurs

Load in SINGAPORE – 1200hrs SGT Fri (0400hrs BST)

In recent months, Icelandic group Sigur Ros have been touring Asia, Europe and North America. Sound Moves UK are the proud cargo partners for the band and production team. In October SM UK performed a particularly quick turn-around co-ordinated by Joe O’Malley (Tour Principal SM UK) and Darren Cox (Operations Lead).

The band was returning from a performance at the Corona Festival in Mexico City and had their next show load-in just 72 hours later; requiring a hot-shot load-out and customs clearance to meet the schedule. As soon as the cargo arrived at Heathrow, SM UK set to work on clearance procedures, transfers and pallet breakdown.

The next venue for the band was the famous BBC Maida Vale studios where the radio station 6 Music was holding a week of live performances from a variety of artists.

Sound Moves and Jack Goff Racing (JG Racing) are celebrating a stunning performance in last weekends’ British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). As proud sponsors of JG Racing, SM UK were there to witness 3 of Jack’s best with 2 top 10 finishes including an phenomenal 2nd place in race 3.

Sound Moves UK handled the inbound freight in August for Beyoncé’s World Tour and is proud to be acting as the global cargo partner for The Mrs Carter Show. The project is headed up SM UK Tour Principal John Corr, who also manages accounts like Walking with Dinosaurs and Celine Dion. 45,000kgs of equipment flew into Heathrow from the US after the tour completed its North American leg.

The next destination was the V-Festival, a dual-location, weekend-long UK Festival at which Beyoncé would be performing to over 120,000 people. John will continue to oversee all cargo operations and will travel with the tour to South America in September as The Mrs Carter Show World Tour visits Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia and Puerto Rico.

In late August the UK Festival season reached its peak and SM once again enjoyed a bumper year, proving logistics services for multiple clients performing at all of the major summer events throughout the UK and Europe. Here is a brief snap-shot of some of the artists performing at the UK Music Festivals in 2013:

Sound Moves UK recently contributed to a hospital magazine, Patients Magazine, which highlights the work carried out by the volunteers of Ashford and St. Peters Hospitals. Amongst many roles, the volunteers run Hospital Radio which provides over 90 hours of live programming each week. Sound Moves sponsored advertising space within the magazine, which is read by patients, staff and the local community.

Sound Moves are also proud to sponsor the fundraising efforts of Andy Corns, a guitar technician for multiple artists. Raising money for the Woodville Community Pre-School, Andy commenced a solo bike ride covering some 380 miles (612kms) from Woodville in Derbyshire to the Isle of Wight and back. Armed with nothing but a tool kit, a bike and boundless enthusiasm, his punishing 5-day schedule included days with over 100 miles of cycling!

Ke$ha’s Europe Tour 2013 just kicked off with some shows in early July starting off in Cork, Ireland. The tour has chosen Sound Moves to handle their logistics. Logistics for the tour is being managed by Brian Santos, West Coast Director based in Los Angeles.

The move from Miami to Europe proved to be extremely tight with 1 day & 1 flight to get the gear over in time to catch the tour trucks. Collaboration was between James Hanrahan in the Sound Moves London office who expedited rapid customs clearance and cross load in London, with Brian Santos ensuring the export side in the US.

Ke$ha’s Tour is to continue with Asian, Australian and North American legs

One of the clearest indicators that SM Summer Operations are in full swing is the increased number of chartered aircraft, or “Trucks with Wings”.  Aircraft are hired (chartered) on segments with tight turn-arounds and long drive times to ensure all schedules are met including truck delivery to aircraft side, loading of the aircraft and customs liaison.

A member of the SM UK team is on board and supervising operations for each chartered sector including multi-sector charter and passenger flight operations. In the last 4 day (from 8 July) we’ve flown from Gdansk to Moscow for the ARCTIC MONKEYS; Budapest to Moscow for HURTS and Riga to Munich for the PET SHOP BOYS (Pictured). Catch more charter updates this summer on our Facebook page.

Sound Moves UK (SM UK), recently managed to grab some down time from the incredibly busy Summer schedules to go racing. The team took part in a 1.5hr endurance race as part of a themed evening with several other Logistics companies. The team were joined by SM UK sponsored British Touring Car driver, Jack Goff. Jack kindly donated his time to the evening after a busy track day instruction at Snetterton circuit, (some 4-hours away). SM UK entered 5 teams (12 in total), on the evening with the final result being a positive one with all 5 finishing in the top 6 as well as taking 2 of the podium positions. Sound Moves UK were recently involved in the organising and running of a studio recording. Liaising with members of UKACC (United Kingdom Air Cargo Club), the recording is destined to be used later in 2013 and coincide with the opening of the Aviva Premiership Rugby season (tbc at time of writing). The A and B sides were recorded at Sphere Studios, South West London where Chief Engineer Franco Cameli (pic), kindly donated his time, expertise and facilities to record and mix the tracks. PINK HEADS TO more

As highlighted before, PINK has been touring throughout Europe in early Summer on her acclaimed "The Truth About Love" World Tour. Post completion of the first European shows, the goods were to now depart to the Southern hemisphere. Departing from Oostende, Belgium the final destination was Perth, Australia with the routing via Mumbai, India for a planned technical stop. A fully chartered aircraft was required. A brand new Boeing 747-800F was supplied for the move. This was the first time an aircraft of this size had landed at Oostende Airport and due to its size was positioned on a remote location stand for loading. Full loading took place under the supervision of Martin Corr (MD – SM UK). A net weight of 83,865kgs was delivered as per schedule agreed and set by SM Tour Principal Andy Lovell and PINK's Production team.

This May members of the Sound Moves UK team were out in force at Brighton's biggest festival, The Great Escape (TGE).

A 3-day multi-venue festival with over 350 acts performing, TGE offers an elaborate mix of genres and focuses on showcasing new and emerging artists to fans and members of the music industry. Sound Moves clients performing at the festival included Everything Everything and Chvrches. SM UK team members Joe O'Malley and Darren Cox were on-site during the week to act as artist and production liaisons. SM UK values building long-term relationships and supplying the logistics needs of clients at all stages of their careers.

Canadian rock band Rush is rocking Europe this May. Having amassed over 45 million record sales over a 45-year career, Rush is set for multiple shows across the US and Europe as part of their Clockwork Angels World Tour. Renowned for musicianship and stunning live shows, the band brought with them a huge 95,000 kgs of cargo which arrived in the UK on a mix of freighter and passenger aircraft. Part of the consignment included two BMW motorbikes used by drummer Neil Peart for recreation in between shows. To carry out the operations Sound Moves UK partnered with Rush's Canadian agents Bzee Brokerage run by Neil and Barry Zeagman. Neil, Martin Corr (MD of SM UK) and Duncan Peek (SM UK Operations) implemented the timed cross-load of the cargo onto waiting tour trucks before dispatching to Manchester for delivery at the first European show on the 22nd May. The international freight operations ran like clockwork.

Over the last few weeks, we have been busy developing a new global website and brand image. The new site design reflects our increasingly diversified client portfolio; across Music Touring, Sports, Live Events and Vendors.

We hope you enjoy the new site and we are always interested in hearing your feedback, so please get in touch at:

Sound Moves UK has entered into a strategic partnership with Jack Goff Racing for the 2013 British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). At 22 years old, Jack Goff is already the reigning Renault Clio Cup Champion and a rising star of British Motorsport. His car, sponsored by SM UK and a variety of creative industry vendors, has been engineered and run by Team HARD.

The season opened at Brands Hatch on 31 March with the first three rounds of this year's Championship. Considering there was no pre-season testing time while the car was in development, the team had a strong start, finishing 13th.

Check out the next 10-car race championship live on ITV4 (UK) and look out for the Sound Moves logo on the rear bumper as Jack overtakes the competition!

In April 2013 Sound Moves flew over 350 tons of combined equipment for the 2013 Beyoncé and PINK World Tours. Both tour sectors were operated and project managed in the US by Justin Carbone (VP of SM USA) and John Corr (BEYONCE Tour Principal - SM UK) with UK operations managed by Andy Lovell (PINK Tour Principal - SM UK)

The shipment travelled in three 747-400 Freighter aircraft from Newark, NJ to East Midlands Airport in the UK and included over 225,000kgs of backline and staging equipment for Beyoncé and over 125,000kgs for PINK.

Off-loading of the aircraft units was supervised by Martin Corr (MD of SM UK) as the cargo was loaded onto waiting tour trucks and delivered to the venue and rehearsal space.

PINK's Truth About Love and Beyoncé's The Mrs. Carter Show are two of the largest tours in Europe this summer and Sound Moves is proud to be supplying project freight services for these talented artists.
